Festival Fashion Designer Spotlight – Kevin Psychedelik
It is no secret that festival fashion is becoming increasingly popular among so many music lovers and festival goers. With the ability to express yourself openly and with the rising of alternative fashion, there are so many amazing designers and options to choose from! In order to promote and showcase some of these talented individuals, I wanted to start creating a “Festival Fashion Designer Spotlight” series to bring awareness to small and local designers.
To kick off the series, my first designer is Kevin Psychedelik. Kevin is from Reno, Nevada and is all about what his name says – colorful prints and funky patterns! What I love about Kevin is that he is one of the first designers I worked with. Our styles are actually very similar as I am a huge fan of bold festival looks, so it’s been such an amazing opportunity collaborating with him! Without further aideu, let’s find out more about Kevin and his brand!
When did you start your brand?
KP – I’ve always been drawn to psychedelic music and art since I began attending festivals. Around 2015, I had been dabbling with digital art under just my own name using a lot of manipulated nature photos I took, but never really did much with it as a brand and ended up taking a year break from it. When I was at a music festival last year (2017), my good friend suggested I use Kevin ‘Psychedelic’ as an artist name. I went with that and put a ‘K’ at the end instead to represent my last name and started making new art with a new style under my new label. I’m hoping Kevin Psychedelik will be more than just art, but a clothing and decor brand, and eventually original music as well.
How did you come up with your style?
KP – I’ve never had much skill or patience with visual art in a physical medium but I’ve always known I want to do visual art somehow. With the advancement of digital photo editing apps and programs, I’ve been able to experiment with several apps and programs to manipulate photos and colors to create mandala style art. I feel the mandala patterns are very appealing to the eye in its contrast and symmetric nature. When you print the patterns I make to clothing, it looks like a more modern form of ‘tie-dye.’ I think the goal is to be as visually vibrant as possible, which I think helps spread good energy to those who see it.
What products do you offer?
KP – When I first started making my designs the first thing I thought of was being able to print them on clothes. I had first discovered sites like Redbubble and Society6, that allow you to upload a design and print it to many types of products. The idea is great but you’re essentially in a sea of other artists trying to do the same thing. After experimenting with that, I decided to do my own direct online store of made-to-order apparel and decor. My shop is at kevinpsychedleik.com and currently offers everything from leggings, shoes, tops and swimwear for men and women. I also offer a variety of home decor items like pillows and blankets as well as outdoor items like backpacks and beach towels which are great to bring with you to any festival. All products are printed by a process called sublimation dye printing, which creates extremely vibrant colors that don’t fade over time. When you see any Kevin Psychedelik products in the wild, you will be drawn to the vibrancy of the color.
How amazing is this one piece bathing suit?! I can’t get enough of it!
These leggings are my absolute favorite! So vibrant and perfect for cooler nights at festivals!
So many of Kevin’s designs can be mixed and matched and ordered in the same prints. These crop tops are so fun and comfy!
Love these colorful boots! So fun for hiking of for festivals.
What inspires you?
KP – From a festival fashion standpoint, I think the thing that inspires me the most is people’s individuality. I love seeing people go crazy with their outfits at festivals are parties. The more over the top, the better. In general, seeing friends make art inspires me to keep making my own. When I started this, I had a goal to make clothing people can express themselves with, whether via festivals, or raves or even through flow arts and yoga. Slowing starting to see more and more people wearing my art keeps me motivated to keep creating new designs.
What does festival fashion mean to you?
KP – Festival fashion to me means to freely express yourself as a human being. Being able to participate in an event through fashion allows you to be a piece of art in your own way and contribute to the experience of others attending. I think many people are drawn to festivals because you can really let a lot of your inhibitions go and live in the moment and not really care what anyone thinks about you. Besides that, it’s fun to ‘dress up’ and break away from social dress norms outside of festivals.
What is coming down the pipeline?
KP – I’m always on the hunt for new items that can be printed on. I recently just added baseball hats that are really awesome to see in person. I also intend on adding more fall/winter offerings like pullover hoodies soon as it beings to cool down. Lastly, I would like to add canvas prints to my store, but I am still researching that. For now, I will keep working on new designs and add them in with my existing products!
